I was speaking with someone at the laundromat last week and we got to talking.
"So what keeps you busy during the day?" I ask.
"Well, a fair bit; I'm in charge of running a small team of account executives who manage a company's printing needs by analysing their printing processes and procedures using a couple of our in-house systems, then provide them with custom procedural advice to reduce costs and wastage." she said.
"Oh! Cool." I replied.
I wanted to know more, I really did. It's in my nature to enquire, poke and prod.
But, where do I even start with that!
You're lucky enough that it's written down. I hardly remembered the start of the sentence by the time she got to the end.
"What about you?" she asked, loading her now washed clothes into the dryer.
Saved by another question. Phew.
"Oh, well, I look at businesses and see where they can make some more money, then help them automate it." was my reply.
"Oh wow, that's interesting!" she replies before jumping in and asking me a bunch of questions.
Long story short, I'm working with her boss to do some copywriting work and helping with their email automation campaigns.
I actually had no clue what she did when we first spoke. It was too much at once. She's not in a sales role, she's in management.
Well, hate to break it to you, but everyone is in sales, no matter what your title says.
She was selling her work's services to me, through her role. As was I, through mine.
So, with that said, try to simplify where you can and you'll succeed.
So, I'd like for people to think about this in the context of their own businesses.
Simplify your message.
Simplify your processes.
Simplify your content, for the love of god!
Smart people simplify; buffoons flounder.
Don't ramble on if you've made your point, and on that note, I think I'll take some of my own advice and leave you to it.
